Eliminating development charges (DCs) on new homes is not a viable solution; instead, modernizing the Development Charges Act is essential. DCs, which have been in place for over 35 years in Ontario, are crucial for funding infrastructure needed for new housing. However, their rapid increase—up to $163,000 per single-family home—has raised concerns about housing affordability. The current system is complex and requires updates to simplify calculations and align with best practices from other regions, ultimately addressing the housing crisis in the GTA.
